Jaz was born an only child, to her mother and three fathers.

Diego, her biological father, was killed when she was around 8 years old. Unknown to her at the time, he had been investigating the disappearance and murder of Luna Claus at the time and got too close to uncovering what really happened to her. Jaz was the one who found his body, and the event traumatized her so much, she avoided dead things afterwards. Losing her father turned the bottom half of her hair pink.

She went to Highborn at age 11 and stayed at school until she was 15 when her magic died from her not specializing. This was mere months before Alec arrived at Highborn after transferring from Shadowhaven Academy.

Jaz spent the next five years in near solitude, with all witches aside from her family rejecting her very existence. Gilbert the ghost appeared after her magic died, a clear sign she was a necromancer, but she didn't realize that at the time.
