Being the heir of the Calderon Dukedom, Mateo intended to marry well, and did so when he fell in love with Alejandra, the heiress to another royal family. Neither had the power level to hold their seats on the high council, and hoped to have children strong enough to regain their positions.

Alejandra and Mateo had two children to continue their legacy, Diego, and Leticia.

When Diego discovered his magical soulmate was a witch of no standing, and no fortune, Alejandra and Mateo unsuccessfully tried to persuade their son to produce official heirs with a woman worthy of his title, while keeping his soulmate on the side. Both knew the choice was the wrong one to make, but they were afraid Diego would abandon them, leaving their Council seat perpetually empty. They knew Diego planned to hand their estate over to Beatrix, which would bring their legacy to an end.

​Diego rejected their proposal, and in a fit of rage, Mateo disinherited his son and turned him out of the house. Diego later had a daughter, Jasmine, with his soulmate. When Jasmine was 8 years old, Diego was killed by an unknown assailant.

Leticia had a daughter named Violet, and Mateo believed their problems were over, but Leticia had no interest in being their heir after what they did to Diego. She left them behind. Alejandra held hope she could convince Leticia to at least give their legacy to her daughter, but at age 13, Violet disappeared and was presumed dead.

In an empty castle with their Council seat untaken, Mateo and Alejandra regretted every choice they'd made that costed them their children.
