Merlin was born in the rainforests of Indonesia. He was captured by humans when he was very young because his species is believed to be extinct and they wanted to study him. He was taken to a zoo in America and kept in a cage.

Terrified and alone, a witch and her soulmates burst into the room he was being kept in, and rescued him from the zoo. The witch, Jaz, named him Merlin, and he became part of her family, helping her with her incredibly rare and powerful necromancy. He bonded with Astella, another familiar in Jaz's house, feeling a family connection to the pink fairy armadillo.
