Jason was born on a small farm in Texas just before the Civil War began. His mixed heritage brought prejudice from both sides, including in his own family. His father loved his mother, Julie, very much, but he died when Knight was young, and his uncles were not the best of people. They all left to fight for the South, while Jason decided to leave and fight for the North, knowing it was not only the right choice to make, but it's the side his father would've fought on. He was only 19 at the time and could've chosen to wait, but he felt it was his duty to fight for equal rights.

While at war, he experienced his first kiss, which was with another man. He never thought much of it, never realized it might make him not straight, but that's mostly because of the way society was back then.

Just before the war ended, Julie died, and the farm was left to him in her will. Jason didn't know she had died until he made it back home, only to find the farmhouse empty. His sister, Merrick, was just 18 at the time and staying with relatives. She resented Jason for leaving her and their mother behind in a hostile environment, and believed heartbreak was what killed their mother, which she also blamed Jason for.

A plague of locusts came and destroyed the orchard, leaving Jason in a deeper pit of despair.

Jason happened upon a young lady one night on his way home, not knowing she was a succubus. She scratched him so he would turn into a werewolf because he reminded her of Nicolas, a man she turned centuries before, the one who fell in love with Anastasia Bathory. Jason didn't fully understand what she did to him until the next full moon when he turned into a werewolf and woke up the next morning covered in blood, not remembering what he'd done all night.

With some idea of what he was now, he found a pack of Lycans and stayed with them for a few years until they realized he wasn't like them. He came to understand that he was different from normal Lycans. He was immortal. He shifted during the full moon.

Jason fell into despair when he ran from them, fully convincing himself he was a monster who didn't deserve to be happy. He started going by his middle name, Knight, because he was no longer the son his mother loved. He felt like he had betrayed her love for him.

There wasn't a single woman he could share his life with, who wouldn't care that he was a monster. And being a monster meant he wasn't worthy of love. He resigned himself to being alone, but he's a pack animal, someone who needs family to feel whole.

When the internet was first becoming a thing, Knight met someone who went by the handle 'Houston' and the two became best friends, a friendship that lasted for decades, with neither knowing each others' real names or who they were. Knight went by 'Trimble' with Houston, a subtle way of showing part of himself so he felt better about being alone. They mostly played games together, having mutual nerdy interests. Houston doesn't know Knight is a werewolf.
