Axel and his brother, Lincoln, met a girl named Meredith when they were all about 17 years old. The boys instantly fell in love with her, with Lincoln recognizing she was his fated mate, and happily sharing her with his brother. Once they got to know her, they realized she was part of the paranormal hunters, but they both decided they didn't care, that they would convince her to stay with them and reject that life. They still hid this knowledge from everyone, to keep Meredith safe.

When Meredith turned 18, she got her first Hunter tattoo, one that gave her the ability to sense paranormal creatures, revealing that her lovers were both Lycans. Meredith believed both of them had no idea she was a hunter, and questioned whether or not they would still love her. At the same time, Lincoln and Axel's father found out they were dating a hunter, and he followed her home afterwards, telling her his sons didn't want her anymore. He ended the threat by clawing her across the stomach.
