Renard and his best friend, Galen, both signed up for the vampire companion program in their early twenties. Galen went to a vampire named Lisbeth, and Renard was assigned to her best friend, Olivier. Renard instantly fell in love with Olivier, and she with him, but romantic relationships between vampires and humans was against the law, so nothing could happen between them, not even a kiss.
His love for Olivier was so strong, he renewed his companion contract twice, something that companions never did. Renard knew becoming a vampire would cost him the life he wanted to make for himself, but he was unable to leave Olivier behind.
Everyone saw Olivier as cold and unfeeling, but Renard knew she was warm and loving underneath. She almost lost herself when she was a Hunter, and Renard's loving attention helped heal her heart. Despite his reluctance to become a vampire, he could not abandon the woman he loved.
