Nicolas grew up in Russia in the 1500's, and happened upon a beautiful woman one night as he was walking home. She thought he was handsome, so she tempted him away and they had a brief love affair before the woman scratched his stomach with her claws. He turned into a werewolf during the next full moon.

Nicolas traveled to Europe to find out more about what he was now, and joined a clan of vampires and Lycans that lived together in harmony. He was the only true werewolf, but everyone treated him with kindness and acceptance.

Among the people was a vampire named Anastasia, and the two quickly fell into a very deep and passionate love, the closest thing to a fated mate that a werewolf can have. Their relationship was not allowed, so they went before the vampire and Lycan elders to ask for permission to marry. The elders refused, and demanded the couple never see each other again.
Nicolas became enraged at the thought of losing his mate, and the resulting fight ended with him accidentally being killed. Anastasia miscarried their child in grief.
