Caroline met and fell in love with a warlock named Liam in the late 1700's. Vampires and witches did not co-exist, and most especially they never had romantic relationships.

The witches took Liam away and put a gag spell on Caroline so she would never be able to speak about Liam and the witches unless someone mentioned them first, and since no one knew about Liam, there was no way she could tell anyone what had happened.

Her parents couldn't understand the snippets of words she could get out around the spell, and they assumed she had gone blood thirsty. They didn't feel right killing her since she hadn't hurt anyone yet, so they all faked their deaths and went into hiding to keep Caroline safe and locked up.

Caroline developed her mind control powers over the centuries until she was able to manipulate her parents into letting her go so she could find Liam, only to discover how much time had passed, and that Liam was long dead.
