Artio met the wizard, Jasper, during his travels in America. He realized she was his familiar, and named her Artio after the Celtic Bear goddess.

Jasper was misguided and evil, but Artio sensed kindness deep inside him, and never gave up hope that he would come back to the light some day.
Eventually, Jasper was killed, and Artio died with him.

After centuries passed, Artio was resurrected as part of a plot by Cyrus Cauldron, in an attempt to resurrect and control her master.
