Shadow was a stray cat in the apocalyptic future, living inside an abandoned high rise apartment building. When Kitty Bathory showed up one night, he saw that she was kind, and wanted to follow her. She adopted the cat and shared her food with him, taking him with her on her travels to be reunited with her family.
